Ace's tricks at just 5 months old. ♥ He is such a smart little piggy, and such a special boy. ♥ Even as young as he is, he is incredibly confident, fearless, and takes on new challenges without hesitation. He really loves learning tricks and just being with me in general. He's always under my feet and just loves hanging out with me, my little shadow. ♥ We definitely have lots more tricks to work on, and aren't slowing down any time soon either! Aiming for 50 tricks by the time Ace turns 1 year old. :)

Stay tuned for more tricks!

P.S. You can follow Ace's progress through our youtube channel for more tricks! A new video is posted for every 5 new tricks he learns.

How to Make a Hoop for a Guinea Pig! (Convertible from Regular to Covered Hoop)

A hoop is an invaluable prop for training guinea pigs, and definitely well worth taking the time to make. You may find it easier to reuse something from home as a hoop, which works well (provided it is safe for the guinea pig!) but it is also fun to make your own! The tutorial above shows how to make a relatively easy, sturdy, and safe hoop for a guinea pig, that can be used as a regular hoop for the guinea pig to walk or jump through, or as a paper covered hoop to make for a more challenging and interesting trick.

A written tutorial can be found on the DIY Guinea Pig Hoop page.

Can a Guinea Pig Learn a Solid Stay Command?

10/22/2015

One of my piggy Spartan's most advanced behaviours was his stay until released cue. I taught him a simple stay where he learned to sit in his pigloo while I was standing, and wait until I sat down to hop out. Later on, I curiously decided to build onto this trick to challenge him a bit to see how good of a stay he could really do. The end result (in the video below) turned out pretty well, with him learning to stay in his pigloo even with a big food distraction right in front of him, in addition to me walking away and leaving his sight! The food in the video is just some cut up green peppers, but he could even do this trick with a bunch of carrots in front of him too (which was his favourite food!)

I think this really goes to show that guinea pigs really aren't stupid or untrainable at all, and are definitely capable of learning to be patient for 30 seconds. ;) Personally, I haven't met very many dogs with a better stay than my special little piggy. :) Any animal is capable of learning control and patience, regardless of the species. Even animals that don't normally sit still and absolutely love food, like guinea pigs. :)
