How to Teach Any Guinea Pig to Stand Up & Beg

11/28/2016

Stand up is one of the most popular (and among the cutest!) tricks to teach your guinea pig. Younger and more agile guinea pigs learn this quickly, and it easily becomes a favorite "go to" trick to beg for food and look cute. :)

This trick is also a good choice for mature guinea pigs. Even though it may take a bit longer to become comfortable with their front paws off the ground, standing up is good for improving and maintaining balance.

How to Teach a Guinea Pig to Circle on Cue

Circle is one of the most popular tricks out there to teach a guinea pig, and for good reason. Running in a circle on cue is incredibly adorable, looks impressive, and yet is not too hard to teach. Any guinea pig can be successful at this trick, and it's especially great for confidence building with beginner pigs.

Running in a circle is often a fun and enjoyable trick for guinea pigs as well; a lot of my guinea pigs often choose this trick to default to when they're trying to get my attention and ask for treats. It's a super cute trick no matter how many times they do it.

Plus, if you want to add more of a challenge and make this trick look even more impressive, you can teach your guinea pig to run in circles in both directions. Circling in two different directions in response to two different hand signals or words makes for an even cooler and more impressive trick.

All around, running in a circle on cue is a great trick to teach a guinea pig, especially as a starting trick to build your piggy's confidence and get started with trick training. Watch the tutorial video above for a step by step guide to teaching this trick, or find the written tutorial on the How to Teach a Guinea Pig to Circle page.

How to Teach a Guinea Pig to Jump Through a Hoop

Jumping or simply walking through a hoop is a great beginner trick, and suitable for all guinea pigs to learn. You can stick with a simple version of walking through a basic hoop; or teach your guinea pig to jump through a higher hoop, squeeze through a smaller hoop, or even go through a blind, paper covered hoop for more of a challenge.

Hoop jumping is an adorable trick, and guinea pigs often love jumping (particularly younger piggies.) If you make a freestanding hoop jump and teach your piggy to jump through that, the obstacle can also be used in a little agility course as well.

How to Teach a Guinea Pig to Play Basketball

Basketball is an impressive and fun trick that is suitable for guinea pigs of all ages and skill levels. This trick is a lot of fun to watch and show others. It does take more patience and practice to teach than many other starting tricks, but it turns out great in the end! If you want to teach your guinea pig to play fetch, basketball is an essential starting point to learn how to pick up a ball and improve their accuracy while holding an object.

Playing basketball can be geared to your guinea pig's abilities and natural talents - ranging from putting the ball in a shallow bowl, to accurately dunking on a higher/smaller net. Choose an option that works best for your guinea pig and just have fun with it!

The tutorial video for this trick can be viewed above, or you can check out the written steps on the How to Teach a Guinea Pig to Play Basketball page on this site.
