How to Teach a Guinea Pig to Fetch to Your Hand

Fetch is a really fun and unique trick to teach your guinea pig. It's not really a beginner trick though, and takes some practice for the guinea pig to get good at it. The extra time is definitely worth it though (in my opinion) as it is a pretty neat, dog-like trick.

If your guinea pig hasn't learned basketball and some of the tricks listed under the Starting Tricks tab, it's a good idea to work on some of those first before starting on fetch. Guinea pigs that have already learned to play basketball (either with a higher net or just placing the ball in a bowl) will have a huge head start on the fetch trick and should be able to skip a few steps in this tutorial.

Once your guinea pig gets good at this trick, you also have the option to keep increasing the distance they can fetch from (two of my piggies learned to fetch from 12+ feet away!) or even teach them to jump over some (very low!) jumps or run through tunnels while carrying a ball. There is really so much you can do to add more challenges and make this trick more interesting.

Thanks for reading & happy training!
